Findings by the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), found more than 1 in 20 children, from age 3 to 17, have some type of balance or dizziness problem.
“These findings suggest that dizziness and balance problems are fairly common among children, and parents and providers should be aware of the impact these problems can have on our children,” said James F. Battey, Jr., M.D., Ph.D, director of the NIDCD and a pediatrician. “Parents who notice dizziness and balance problems in their children should consult a health care provider to rule out a serious underlying condition.”
Vertigo
The feeling of spinning or just turning your head into a different position can trigger vertigo. Typically caused by fluid build up in the inner ear or other conditions affecting the inner ear.
Labyrinthitis
Occurs when a virus, either from a flu or cold, infects the channels deep in the ear. Fluid build up and swelling impacting the brain causing confusion, vertigo, tinnitus, and even vomiting.
Vestibular Neuronitis
A virus that causes inflammation and swelling of the vestibular nerve, which goes from the inner ear to the brain. Symptoms include, unsteadiness, dizziness, and nausea.
Vestibular Migraines
Occur when the vestibular nerve is inflamed from a migraine, caused by stress, certain food, or other conditions. It can cause sensitivity to sound and light, nausea, dizziness, and ringing sound in the ears.
