The medical specialty of Otolaryngology handles conditions of the ears, nose, throat, head, and neck. While it is one of the oldest medical speciality, there is some confusion when you or a family member should make an appointment to see an ENT.
What does an Ear, Nose & Throat Doctor do?
Specifically, allergies, sinus, hearing and balance, head and neck cancer, Otology (ear surgery), facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, nasal and sinus surgery, audiology, and balloon sinuplasty, a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure used to treat chronic sinusitis.
These conditions include pain, pressure, and headaches from sinus problems, throat conditions that can affect swallowing, talking, and eating, ear pain and infections, hearing problems and tinnitus, and other issues of the neck and head.
When should I see an ENT?
Typically, a primary care physician will refer a patient to an ENT if a condition needs a specialist or if a person is having an ongoing problem.
For instance, if you find yourself suffering from sinus problems more often than not, you may find relief with Balloon Sinuplasty. A minimally invasive endoscopic procedure used to treat an inflammation of the lining within the paranasal sinuses.
Unlike traditional sinus surgery, balloon sinuplasty does not require incisions, or any removal of bone or tissue, although, in certain cases, it may be used in conjunction with traditional surgery. Balloon sinuplasty has many advantages over traditional procedures.
