Tinnitus is a ringing, buzzing, wooshing, or pulsing in one or both ears. It can range in loudness and tenor and is generally described as annoying although some people find it unbearable. In the general population, tinnitus affects as many as 20% of people. Many people experience some level of tinnitus as they age. It’s also connected to some circulatory disorders.

Some research suggests that tinnitus may occur more frequently in pregnant women. The onset of tinnitus may be related to a fluctuation of hormones. Some researchers think that hormones are related to tinnitus because women who are undergoing hormone replacement therapy also seem to have a higher incidence of tinnitus.

Tinnitus can greatly affect quality of life. Many people who experience tinnitus have, as a result, increased levels of stress, fatigue, anxiety, depression, and trouble sleeping.
