It’s getting hot and the kids are out of school. It’s time for playing and swimming from sun up to sun down.
Regardless of whether the swimming is in a pool, lake, or ocean, ear infections are bound to happen.
The most common type is called otitis externa, mostly known as swimmer’s ear. Most are caused by a bacterial infection, but in Florida can also commonly be caused by mold or yeast.
Symptoms include swelling, pain, and often drainage. There is also some temporary hearing loss or tinnitus. Fever is only a rare symptom, and likewise is rarely in both ears.
Treatment is typically with eardrops, either antibacterial or antifungal, along with careful cleaning done in the ENT’s office. If you develop any trouble, make sure to call Orlando ENT Associates for an appointment.
