Tis’ the season for colds, allergies and sinus infections. Unfortunately, The warm humidity in Central Florida’s winter is still quite high. The moist, warm air plays a big part in bacteria growth and development of sinus infections.

Often times sinus infections can mimic the symptoms of a common cold or allergies, but the treatment is different. Which means you may not find long term relief from common medications.

Sinus infections, also known as sinusitis, a painful condition. It is when the sinus cavities become inflamed, swollen, and infected.

Causing a host of symptoms, such as sinus pain, pressure, headaches, coughing, congestion, and an overall feeling of uneasiness.

While sinus infections can be the result of a cold, they are typically caused by an infection or virus. Or, occasionally they can be the result of a bacteria or fungi infection.

It is a Cold, Allergies, or Sinusitis?

Well, according to Acclarent, many patients think they have a cold or allergies, when they really have sinusitis. Which is why it is important to get a proper diagnosis form an Ears, Nose and Throat (ENT) doctor.

Sinusitis (also called rhinosinusitis) is an inflammation of the sinus lining that prevents normal mucus drainage through the nose. This blockage causes mucus to build up in the sinuses and can lead to very uncomfortable symptoms.

Sinusitis symptoms may include:

    • Sinus pressure and congestion
    • Sinus headache
    • Facial pain
    • Tenderness and swelling around the eyes, cheeks, nose and forehead
    • Difficulty breathing through the nose
    • Loss of the sense of smell or taste
    • Yellow or green mucus from the nose
    • Teeth pain
    • Fatigue
    • Sore throat from nasal discharge
    • Bad breath

After listening to your history of symptoms and conducting an exam, your doctor may diagnose you with acute sinusitis, which is a temporary inflammation of the sinus lining that is caused by a bacterial infection and commonly called a sinus infection.
