Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, can affect children and adults alike. It’s the most common allergic condition. Hay fever is an allergic reaction to any number of pollen-producing grasses, such as ragweed, grass, trees, weeds, or hay.

Despite it’s common name, people who are suffering from hay fever don’t exhibit fever as a symptom. Typical symptoms include:

  • Sneezing
  • Clear nasal discharge
  • Dark circles under the eyes
  • Red, irritated eyes
  • Itchiness in the eyes, inside the nose, or in the sinus cavity

Hay fever season varies geographically. The full season starts in spring and goes until fall, but chances are you’ll only experience symptoms during part of that time as the weather shifts. Because hay fever triggers travel on the air, they’re very difficult to avoid. There are some things you can do to lessen exposure to allergens. When pollen days are high, try to avoid being outside for long periods of time. When inside, keep windows closed and shower before bed.

For severe allergies, your OrlandoENT ear, nose, and throat doctor may prescribe nasal sprays or suggest that you undergo ongoing allergy therapy.
